Description: An ensemble written for 10 percussion performers documenting a musical escape from the oppression of a narcissist. Structured in three movements and several sub-sections, "Unwilling or Unable" features driving complex rhythms and harmonies, beautiful flowing passages, and an uplifting tonal finale. Utilizing a large variety of percussion instruments, the composition inundates the listener with a wash of textures and timbres. "Unwilling or Unable" will prove to be an exciting moment in any ensemble concert.

Description: This was one of my more in-depth explorations of programmatic music. The image of the music is explained below: Moraine Lake is one of the most breathtakingly gorgeous places I've experienced, and it is just in my backyard in Calgary. The image I was going for was that of a camera traveling throughout the lake and surrounding scenery. For the introduction, I'm projecting the camera's frame of reference as only the surface of the lake at dawn, mirror-like, but shaded with the hue of the lake (D Lydian has a very turquoise hue for me). The continuo starts, and we plunge deep into the abyss of the lake, where we are at the mercy of the currents and turbulent waters (represented by the motion of the clarinets and the harmony, swirling, constantly unresolved, cadencing to places that are unrelated to the original key). We are pushed side to side by different forces (trumpets and bass clarinet), and weaving in and out of the detritus of the lake bed. The rise and fall of the counter-melody is representative of the he pulsation of the flora in the middle depths of the lake -- imagine seaweed at the mercy of currents. A few dramatic moments arise as we longingly see the light from the surface break through the darkness, but there is inherent sadness and conflict, as the camera is beneath the surface, at the mercy of the depths. We arrive at a shallow depth for the bass and piano solos, where the waters are no longer as dark and heavy, culminating in a frightening encounter with a northern pike, which immediately darts away, much to our relief. Finally, as the fauna of the lake begin to surround us, encouraging the camera ever skyward, we arrive at the surface to fly over the lake, and witness it in context for the first time -- the mountains appearing majestically, their sharp edges reflecting crisply off of the polished, reflective surface of the lake. The sun is blazing incandescently, and we end the piece by pointing the camera directly into the star, filling our entire field of view with light, blinding us and searing a vermilion hue onto our retinas.

Description: This piece features not only trumpet/flugel and piano, but some incredible ensemble writing that will help your band stand out. Some beautiful rubato writing leads into a latin feel that has many ensemble flourishes, ending with Trumpet/Tenor in a duet that leaves you wanting more.

Description: This uptempo burner composed by Woody Witt and arranged by Aaron Lington features tenor saxophone and trumpet with plenty of modal solo space for each. The saxophone section gets to sink their teeth into a melodic soli and the whole band shines as the chart screams to a close.

Description: The Beat In Progress is a highly demanding chart for the advanced college jazz ensemble. It was selected for the 2012 Jazz Educators Network (JEN) Composition Showcase, as well as recognized in 2010 for an ASCAP Young Jazz Composer's Award Honorable Mention. Drawing inspiration from modern Electronic Dance Music as well as contemporary jazz harmony, The Beat In Progress is set at a punishing tempo to showcase the drums in a Drum'n'Bass style (An electronic music genre). Featured soloists are Alto Saxophone and Piano, with circular breathing recommended in the Alto Saxophone 1 part for an extended section.

Description: This fun upbeat funky piece features the Tenors and Baritone in the sax section in a show stopping way. Angular lines, and full on overtone power really match the energy of the title. Sure to be a closer for any ensemble that will bring down the house!

The solos are modal in nature, with the Soprano Sax solo being in odd meter, Trombone being in 12/8, and an open Drum solo. A challenging, but fun chart.
